I am Professor of Chinese Economy and Society at Constructor University in Bremen and the speaker of the Research Unit “Learning Empire” (FOR 5913/1). Before, I was, inter alia, Theodor Heuss Lecturer at the New School for Social Research in New York and research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne. My research combines approaches from IR, Global Political Economy and China studies.

My research focuses on China’s resurgence, challenges for China’s growth model, and Chinese social policy dynamics. I have extensive experience in managing third-party funded and collaborative projects, including six DFG research grants, a collaborative project funded by the BMBF, and a Horizon 2020 COST Action. My involvement in different networks—as board member of the Political Economy Section of the DVPW (German Political Science Association, 2012–2015), as national spokesperson of ASC (Arbeitskreis Sozialwissenschaftliche Chinaforschung 2021–2023) or as network organizer of the annual SASE conferences (since 2011)—enabled me to build bridges between political scientists and China specialists.
I have published nine books—including the award-winning monographs Global Political Economy and the Modern State System (2014) and China’s Capitalism (2019)—several edited volumes and special issues, and more than 70 articles. Broader recent analyses can be found in China’s Capitalism: A Paradoxical Route to Economic Prosperity, in A Chinese Bureaucracy for Innovation-Driven Development?, and in Varieties of Peripheral Growth Models.
